According to the American Dental Association®, more than 5 million teeth are knocked out during sporting activities each year. (www.ada.org)
SportsguardsSports Mouthguards Athletes who participate in basketball, baseball, football, hockey, wrestling, soccer or lacrosse, as well as recreational sports such as skateboarding and bicycling, should wear mouthguards. Sports mouthguards are a "must" for patients that wear orthodontic appliances. Types of Sports Mouthguards: Over-the-Counter Mouthguards. These come in a few varieties, including stock non-fitted mouthguards, and "boil and bite" mouthguards that are designed to be warmed in hot water and fitted in the mouth by pressing softened acrylic to mold it to the teeth.
Custom-fitted Mouthguards. These are designed by one of our dentists and fabricated by our dental laboratory to specifically fit your child's mouth. Because they are custom, it is possible to achieve a much better fit than over-the-counter types, and offer the greatest level of protection.
